A Taste of Germany at Home

If you’ve spent time wandering the streets of Berlin, Stuttgart, or anywhere in Germany, you’ve likely seen (or smelled!) the iconic street food dish known as currywurst. This comforting combo of perfectly cooked sausage, curried ketchup, and crispy fries is a favorite for locals and travelers alike, and now you can make it at home.

In today’s post, I’m recreating one of the best currywursts I’ve had in Germany, right from my own kitchen. This meal was inspired by a recent family day exploring Stuttgart, and like any true mom moment, it turned into a full feast!

What Is Currywurst?

Currywurst is a fast-food classic in Germany, traditionally made by slicing grilled or pan-fried bratwurst and smothering it in a sweet, spicy curry ketchup sauce. It’s often served with fries (pommes), mayo, and a slice of crusty bread.

I first made this dish years ago, and ironically, before I knew I’d one day live in Germany! The fusion of warm spices and street-food simplicity reminds me of my time in India, and every time I make it now, it feels like a full-circle moment.

Let’s dive into how to make it at home!

Currywurst Sauce: Step-by-Step

This is the heart of the dish. We’re going for a rich, spiced, slightly sweet ketchup-based sauce.

  1. Sauté the onions: In a pan over medium heat, warm 1 tbsp olive oil and sauté 1 cup of diced onions until translucent.
  2. Toast the spices: Add 2 tbsp curry powder, 1 tbsp sugar, 1 tsp paprika, 1 tsp garlic powder, and 1/2 tsp chili powder. Let them toast for a minute to bloom the flavors.
  3. Add ketchup: Pour in 1 cup of ketchup. Stir to combine.
  4. Thin the sauce: Add a splash of water to loosen the consistency. Stir and simmer gently.
  5. Blend: Transfer the sauce to a blender or use an immersion blender until smooth (or keep a bit of texture if you prefer).
  6. Finish with Worcestershire: Stir in 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper to taste.

Set aside while you prepare the rest.

Grilling the Sausages

We used a mix of German bratwurst and cheddar sausages for variety. Here’s how to prepare them:

  1. Cut shallow slits into each sausage to prevent bursting.
  2. Grill or pan-fry with a little oil over medium heat until fully cooked and nicely browned.
  3. Cover with a lid for even cooking if needed.

Serving Suggestions

Plate up your currywurst by slicing the sausages and pouring over that luscious curry ketchup. Serve alongside:

  • Crispy oven-baked or fried fries
  • A slice of crusty brown bread
  • Optional: Ketchup + mayo dip for fries
  • Fresh fruit or veggies for variety (we served oranges, pomegranate, and cucumbers)
