Traveling with a toddler can be an adventure, but with the right strategies, it can also be an enjoyable experience for you and your little one. In this guide, we’ll explore some tried-and-tested tips and tricks to ensure smooth sailing on your next family trip.
1. Leave Early and Allow Ample Time
The key to a successful journey with a toddler is to avoid rushing. Plan ahead and leave early to give yourself plenty of time to navigate airports, train stations, or car rides. Toddlers thrive on routine, so sticking to their schedule as much as possible can help minimize stress for everyone involved.
Today, I had ample time to film this video because we left very early. Our flight isn’t until around 11:30, yet we departed from our apartment at 7:00. Departing early allows for a more relaxed travel experience, even amidst the chaos of mom life. Despite my best efforts, I often feel flustered and sweating during travel. However, leaving early provides a buffer, reducing stress and allowing for smoother transitions.
2. Pack a Variety of Snacks
Snacks are a parent’s best friend when traveling with a toddler. Pack a selection of healthy and familiar snacks to keep hunger at bay and prevent any potential meltdowns. Opt for easy-to-pack options like fruit slices, crackers, and granola bars to satisfy hunger on the go.
My bag is always half full of snacks when we travel for both myself and my baby, with a few extras for my husband if he is joining us on an adventure. Our toddler can enjoy real food at his age, simplifying mealtime choices. However, it’s crucial to pack snacks that align with dietary restrictions and preferences. I’ve learned the importance of being well-prepared, especially when faced with unexpected delays or hunger pangs mid-flight.
3. Bring Along Toys and Entertainment
Keep your toddler entertained during travel by packing their favorite toys, books, and activities. Choose compact, lightweight, and engaging items to hold their attention during long journeys. Interactive toys, coloring books, and small puzzles can help keep boredom at bay and make the travel experience more enjoyable for your little one.

Whether it’s books, busy boards, music, or shows we’ve downloaded from Netflix, ensuring various entertainment options is essential for keeping our toddler engaged and content during travel. While my toddler isn’t yet interested in screens, I’ve found busy boards to be a fantastic alternative, keeping him occupied and stimulated without relying on electronic devices.
4. Invest in a Quality Travel Stroller
A good travel stroller can be a game-changer when exploring new destinations with a toddler. Look for a lightweight, collapsible stroller that’s easy to maneuver and transport. A compact stroller allows you to navigate crowded airports or narrow streets with ease, giving you and your child the freedom to explore comfortably.

Prepare for any situation by packing essential items to keep your toddler comfortable throughout the journey. Bring extra clothes, a lightweight blanket, and any comfort items your child relies on, such as a favorite blanket or stuffed animal. Having these items on hand can help soothe your toddler and make them feel secure in unfamiliar surroundings.
You never know when accidents or unexpected temperature changes may occur, so it’s best to be prepared. Also, prioritizing comfort items for you and your little one can help create a more relaxed and enjoyable travel environment.
6. Bonus Tip: Travel Light
When traveling with a toddler, less is often more. Avoid overpacking by bringing only the essentials and leaving unnecessary items behind. Stick to the essentials like diapers, wipes, and a change of clothes, and resist the urge to bring along bulky toys or unnecessary gear. Traveling light not only makes navigating airports and hotels easier but also ensures you have everything you need without being weighed down. Remember that you’ll ultimately be responsible for lugging it all around.
